Chiropractic Care

One of the largest primary-contact health care professions in Ontario, chiropractic is a non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the neuromusculoskeletal system.

Dr. Leah practices using an intergrative approach which combines her expertise in soft tissue therapy (often ART®), acupuncture, spinal and extremity manipulation and sometimes modalities such as laser therapy (Bioflex®), Ultrasound and/or IFC.

Dr. Leah provides a diagnosis, treatment and preventative care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.

For many conditions, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care is frequently the primary method of treatment. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the neuromusculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.  Dr. Leah often refers to the other health practitioners at QCC to provide supportive care: Julia for corrective exercises to complement treatment, Krystyne and Natalie for further soft tissue therapy to keep the muscles loosened and Dr. Moira in the case of an underlying systemic, inflammatory, or chronic stress condition.

Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions. According to patient surveys, by treating the neuromusculoskeletal elements of such disorders, chiropractic treatment has been shown to improve the general well-being of the patient.

There are many reasons to seek chiropractic care:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headache
  • Whiplash
  • Strains and sprains
  • Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
  • Work and sports injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Limited range of motion in the back, shoulder, neck or limbs
  • General health and well-being

Active Release Technique (ART®)

ART® is a patented, soft tissue system that treats conditions involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved with ART®

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient eastern medicine technique used to achieve a balance of energy, improve function and reduce pain using needles. Medical Acupuncture is a more recent branch of this medicine and can be employed for a number of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.  Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is more targeted to the organ systems; gynecological issues, digestive problems, inflammatory conditions, improved immune function and stress relief to name a few.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are skilled in the management of a broad range of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal, circulatory and respiratory systems. Here are some of the ways physiotherapy can help:

  • Address physical challenges associated with repetitive strain injury, arthritis, etc.
  • Attend to sports injuries and provide advice on prevention and recurrence
  • Get you back on your feet after surgery
  • Maximize your mobility if you have a neurological disorder such as stroke, spinal cord injury or Parkinson’s disease
  • Oversee rehabilitation in your home after you have been ill or injured
  • Provide pre- and post-natal care and attend to other women’s health conditions
  • Work with you to treat and manage respiratory and cardiac conditions

Naturopathic Medicine

  • Clinical Nutrition - personalized dietary recommendations, food choices and nutritional supplements are selected to provide each individual with the nutrients they need to carry on their daily activities with ample energy.
  • Acupunture & Traditional Chinese Medicine - The Chinese philosophy of healing is that the body's energy,  which is knows as "Qi" (pronounced "chee") needs to flow freely and harmoniously for good health.  Disease results from an imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi, which can manifest in diverse symptoms from migraines to digestive to reproductive issues.  Acupuncture, Chinese herbs and lifestyle changes are used to rebalance the flow of Qi which results in the restoration of health
  • Botanical Medicine - The medicinal properties of plants are used in various forms (teas, tinctures, capsules, compresses etc.) to support the healing of the body in a variety of health conditions from eczema to menstrual irregularities.
  • Lifestyle Counselling - risk factors for various conditions like hypertension and cancer are assessed in order to proactively suggest therapies to prevent these diseases.  Stress management plans and interactive self-assessment tools are individualized to help each person prepare for and successfully incorporate the lifestyle changes necessary to achieve their health goals.
  • Homeopathy - Dilute amounts of natural substances are selected to address the uniqueness of an individual based on the principle of "like cures like".  These substances are knows as homeopathic remedies, and they encourage an individual's "vital force", which is their own innate healing ability, to overcome the disease it is faced with and return to health.  Remedies can also be used for acute conditions like insect bites, strains, and sore throats.
  • Physical Medicine and Hydrotherapy - naturopathic bodywork and the healing properties of water are used to prevent and heal dysfunction and injuries of the muscles, joints and body systems.
  • Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture - Dr. Odette pursued additional training to become certified in this natural, non-chemical alternative to younger looking skin.  "Acupuncture Facelift" as it is also known, can help to reduce dark circles under the eyes, lift the chin and minimize the appearance of fine lines.  This service helps enhance your inner radiance and beauty, leaving you with an enhanced sense of self and well being.
  • Laboratory TestingLifelabs Ontario - For your convenience, Dr. Odette has set up an account with LifeLabs Ontario.  If laboratory blood work is needed to confirm or rule out specific health conditions and you cannot get an appointment with you family doctor, or simply prefer to manage your naturopathic care privately, Dr. Odette will give you a requisition to have your blood drawn and tested privately at one of the LifeLabs locations in Scarborough.

  • Food Allergy:  Both IgG and IgE testing is available to help determine specific food allergens and whether your health condition is a result of an immediate or delayed reaction
  • Inhalant Allergy:  Testing of various inhaled substances from oak trees to dust mites and mold are available to help determine the cause of allergic reactions.

Registered Massage Therapy

Massage uses various techniques to increase circulation and lymphatic flow to promote the healing process.  Your massage therapist will use information from your medical history to provide safe and effective treatment customized for your needs.

Laser Therapy

The most advanced and comprehensive Low Intensity Laser Therapy System (LILT) for the treatment of sports injuries, arthritis and a wide variety of musculoskeletal pathologies.

The BioFlex System, http://www.meditech-bioflex.com,  is used in medical clinics, chiropractic clinics, rehabilitation centres, pain treatment clinics and sports facilities, to list just a few.

Laser therapy is effective in restoring tissue to its normal state i.e. it acts to reverse the pathology and thereby relieves symptoms. Initially there is a varying degree of pain relief due to the release of endorphins and cortisol produced by the body itself, but the more important effect is the curative factor which is cumulative over the course of a series of treatments. These may vary from one treatment to as many as twenty treatments.

  • production and release of beta-endorphins
  • cortisone production which enables the body to combat the stress associated with trauma or disease process
  • ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production is increased resulting in improved cellular metabolism
  • DNA (desoxyribosenucleicacid) production, the protein building block of tissue is substantially increased
  • Neurotransmission is facilitated due to elevated levels of serotonin and acetylcholine
  • Mitochondrial activity is stimulated resulting in cell replication etc
  • Modulation of macrophages, fibroblasts and other cells
  • Angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)
  • Regulates cell membrane potential, essential in NA, CL and K ion transfer (electrolyte balance)
  • Cytokines and other chemicals enhancing cellular communications are released
  • Immune response is stimulated
  • Lymphatic drainage is improved
  • The histamine response is positively altered
  • Production of growth hormone is released
  • Stimulation of the healing processes is accompanied by relief symptoms
What is Laser Therapy?
Laser therapy is the use of monochromatic light emission from a low intensity laser diode (250 milliwatts or less) or an array of high intensity Super Luminous Diodes (providing total optical power in the 1000-2000 mw range) to treat musculoskeletal injuries, chronic and degenerative conditions and to heal wounds. The light source is placed in contact with the skin allowing the photon energy to penetrate tissue where by it interacts with the various intracellular biomolecules resulting in the restoration of normal cell function and enhancement of the body’s healing processes. The light is absorbed in irradiated tissue, a variety of chromophobes absorb the photons and convert the light energy in to useful biochemical energy within the cell. Multiple ‘Secondary’ reactions also occur such as restoration of cellular function; reduction in pain and inflammation and enhancement of wound healing processes.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound ( US ) is a type of therapeutic intervention whereby sound waves vibrate at frequencies above those that the human ear can hear at 1 million cycles per second. US is produced by a high frequency A/C being applied to a crystal which deforms the crystal and transfers this vibratory energy to a metal plate and then onto the patient’s tissue.

The action of Continuous US on human tissue can be that of:

  • Thermal - friction caused by vibration of the molecules within the patients tissue
  • Mechanical – tissue compresses and expands causing a micro massaging effect

The action of Pulsed US on human tissue can be that of:

  • Tissue temperature rise
  • Decreased nerve conduction speed
  • Increased circulation
  • Increased tendon extensibility
  • Reduced adhesion formation
  • Decreased pain
  • Increased wound healing
  • Muscle relaxation

Custom Orthotics

Custom made orthotic devices and custom orthotic shoes are part of the services that are provided at Quarry Chiropractic Clinic. Orthotics are a custom device that are inserted in ones daily footwear to help alleviate a variety of complaints from low back pain, lower leg problems such as knee and foot ailments such as what is commonly referred to as plantar fascitis. It is an orthopedic appliance or apparatus used to support, align, prevent or correct deformities or to improve the function of the movable parts of the body. Orthotic function is to allow the relaxation of muscle, joint, ligaments or other soft tissue structures. As well, it helps to stabilize a joint to allow more functional movement of more distal joints.

We use The Orthotic Group as the main supplier for custom orthotics and custom orthotic footwear. Please feel free to check out their website at www.theorthoticgroup.com for a complete listing of the variety of orthotics that can be made as well as dress, casual, sport and sandal custom orthotic footwear.
